Whisky
Jump to: navigation, search
Whisky is my favourite type of alcoholic beverage. It is distilled from fermented grain mash and aged in oak casks. Whisky gains as much as 60% of its flavor from the type of cask used in its aging process. For Scotch whisky the casks used are typically old sherry or bourbon casks.

About Scotch Whisky

By law, Scotch Whisky must be wholly matured in Scotland, in oak casks for a period of not less than three years and to which no substance other than water and spirit caramel has been added. Caramel has traditionally been added only to adjust the colour of the batched product to match the standard of the specific brand.

Malts and blends

Single Malt
A Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a 100% malted barley and the product of one specific distillery and has not been mixed with whisky from any other distilleries.
Grain
A Single grain whisky is the product of one Grain distillery and is usually made from wheat, corn or unmalted barley.
Blended
A blended scotch whisky may contain a combination of whiskies from over 40 or 50 different malt and grain distilleries.
Pure Malt
A Pure Malt will contain a number of malt whiskies that have been skilfully blended together or "married," to create a consistent whisky with its own distinct, identifiable character. Such a malt can also consist entirely of malt whiskies of various ages from the same distillery. However, vatted malts will never contain any grain whisky.

It's for medicinal purposes, honest.....

A large shot of whisky can help protect against heart disease, scientists have claimed. Researchers claim that drinking the equivalent of three or four pub measures of the spirit can boost the body's defences against disease. Read more

My favourites

Glenkinchie
a Scotch single malt whisky, produced at the Glenkinchie Distillery near Edinburgh. It is one of only three remaining Lowland malt whiskies in production.

The standard 10 year old Glenkinchie is a fairly typical lowland whisky in that it is fresh and light in character, with notes of lemon and cut grass. A sweet nose and a hint of peat make this a good introduction to the world of single malts.

Lagavulin
a single malt Scotch whisky produced at Lagavulin on the island of Islay.

The standard Lagavulin single malt is 16 years old and has a powerful, peat-smoke aroma. It is described as being robustly full-bodied, well balanced, and smooth, with a slight sweetness on the palate.

Caol Ila
a Scotch single malt whisky, produced at the Caol Ila Distillery near Port Askaig on the isle of Islay, Scotland.

Caol Ila is one of the lighter Islay whiskies, pale in colour, with peaty, floral and peppery notes.

Cardhu
a single malt Scotch whisky produced at Cardhu Distillery located high on the hills on the north side of the Spey Valley with extensive views to the south.

The malt is pretty typical of a Speyside malt. It is highly approachable – smooth, sweet, mellow and uncomplicated and often described as silky. It has good body and length.
